Fyre Festival canceled after guests allege “scam”

The Fyre Festival in the Bahamas, billed as a “luxury” event featuring big music acts and celebrity chefs, is now canceled after a chaotic false start, stranding angry visitors who shelled out thousands of dollars to attend.

“Due to unforeseen and extenuating circumstances, Fyre Festival has been fully postponed,” the festival tweeted on Friday. “After assessing the situation this morning and looking at best options for our guests, we cannot move forward as we hoped we could. At this time, we are working tirelessly to get flights scheduled and get all travelers home safely.”

The statement was of little solace to those who were already on the island. After promises of gourmet meals from celebrity chefs, festival-goes who arrived on Thursday were treated to sandwich bread, salad and slices of cheese, one attendee claimed on Twitter.

Visitors at the music event called it a fraud. On its website, the Fyre Festival described itself a “cultural moment created from a blend of music, art, and food,” and an ad for the event said it featured “the best in food, art, music and adventure.” Ja Rule was one of the festival’s co-creators and Blink-182, Tyga and Desiigner were supposed to perform.

Some patrons paid up to $200,000 to stay in private villas, attend the festival and enjoy high-end food and music from renowned artists, CBS Dallas reports.

The first wave of visitors arrived to an unfinished festival site on Thursday. Concertgoer Farah Bengozi told CBS Dallas that the promised “villas” turned out to be bare-bones tents, and there were no big-name musicians or celebrity chefs to be seen.

“The food they served was like a soup kitchen, and there wasn’t enough of it,” she said. “This was a scam for sure … It could have been something, but they didn’t put effort into it.”

Red flags about the festival began to surface earlier this month when Fyre’s organizers were late in paying artists, the Wall Street Journal reported. One customer told the Journal that he was nervous because the concierge team did not give him flight information until approximately a month after they said they would. People close to the festival also told the Journal that its organizers lacked experience.

The festival’s would-be start descended into chaos on Thursday when attendees were delayed for hours on a flight to Exuma from Miami, then eventually canceled, with flight staff saying the island was over capacity: “We have been advised by Fyre, the tour operator of your flight, that they can no longer accept any guests in Exuma,” an airline representative said in a video uploaded by a passenger. “Due to overcapacity on the island, we need to cancel the flights to ensure the safety of our guests.”

Some guests who were already at Exuma were not permitted to leave the airport and were allegedly locked in.

Guests who had made it to the festival site who took buses to Nassau and tried to fly out of the capital were also thwarted.

“Everyone was ready to go, but they checked our passports a million times, said things weren’t matching up,” Benghozi told CBS Dallas. “They asked us to step out of the plane.”

Blink-182 also alluded to problems when they canceled their performance, tweeting, “Regrettably, and after much careful and difficult consideration, we want to let you know that we won’t be performing at Fyre Fest in the Bahamas this weekend and next weekend. We’re not confident that we would have what we need to give you the quality of performances we always give fans.”

— blink-182 (@blink182) April 27, 2017

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism issued a statement saying: “We are extremely disappointed in the way the events unfolded yesterday with the Fyre Festival. We offer a heartfelt apology to all who traveled to our country for this event.”

— The Bahamas (@VisitTheBahamas) April 28, 2017

Ironically, an early advertisement for Fyre Festival that showed models like Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin prancing on the beach started with a voiceover that said, “The actual experience exceeds our expectations.”

Carmelo Anthony’s Side Chick Planned Pregnancy To ‘Hustle’ Money — Friend Says

Say it ain’t so! Carmelo Anthony’s alleged mistress, Mia Angel Burks, supposedly got pregnant to ‘hustle’ money from the NBA player. One of Mia’s friends put her on blast on April 20, claiming she ‘wanted’ the baby in order to get some dough.

Chicago-based educator Mia Angel Burks allegedly got pregnant with Carmelo Anthony‘s, 32, child to “hustle” money from the New York Knicks player. A few days ago, it was revealed that he and La La Anthony, 37, have sadly split, after seven years of marriage. Now, a friend of his alleged mistress named Anthony Jacobs, spilled all the tea during an explosive radio interview with local Chicago radio station on April 20. Mia is supposedly four to five months pregnant and also bought her own tickets to fly to NYC to meet Carmelo and have sex.

Mia’s (probably now) ex-friend claims she’s very educated and has two masters degrees from Northwestern University. Anthony says that it’s time for the world to know the truth, since the previous report about Carmelo getting a “stripper pregnant is false.” The girl used to date Lil Durk and “mess with” Ryan Henry from Black Ink Chicago, and she’s still looking for a “guy to hold her down.” As far as the alleged pregnancy goes, Anthony claims Mia probably “wanted it.”

“Mia met Carmelo at Room Seven, a club in Chicago,” when he was here for the NBA draft doing press. “There was a lot of athletes and pretty girls,” Anthony told the station. “She’s not a stripper…I’ve known that [they’ve dated] for some months now.” It’s unclear how Anthony knows this information or if Mia actually executed some well-thought out plan. “Mia seems low-key and doesn’t obsess over Carmelo,” Anthony said. “She was more giddy about it than anything.”

Anthony did add that Mia wasn’t intending to break up Carmelo and La La Anthony‘s marriage. However, it looks like that ship has sailed for now as La La Anthony was spotted without her massive wedding ring, April 18, just one day after she and Carmelo’s split went public.

HollywoodLifers, what do you make of Anthony’s shocking claims? Tell us!

Marijuana legalization support at all-time high

By Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus, Kabir Khanna and Anthony Salvanto

A recent CBS News poll shows support for legalizing marijuana is higher than ever.

Sixty-one percent of Americans think marijuana use should be legal, a five-point increase from last year and the highest percentage ever recorded in this poll. Eighty-eight percent favor medical marijuana use.

Seventy-one percent oppose the federal government’s efforts to stop marijuana sales and its use in states that have legalized it, including opposition from most Republicans, Democrats, and independents.

Sixty-five percent think marijuana is less dangerous than most other drugs. And only 23 percent think legalizing marijuana leads to an increase violent crime.

More generally on the topic of drug abuse, 69 percent think that should be treated as an addiction and mental health problem rather than a criminal offense.

Support for legal marijuana continues to climb

The belief that pot should be legal has reached a new high in CBS News polls.  Sixty-one percent of Americans now say the it should be, a five-point increase from a year ago.  This sentiment has increased each year we’ve measured it since 2013, with the turning point to majority support coming in 2014. Back in 1979, this poll found just 27 percent saying it should be legal.

Those over 65 are the most opposed to legalization, but most under age 65 support it. And women are now as much in favor of legal marijuana as men are; in previous years they were less so.

Many states have legalized pot in some form, and most Americans don’t think the federal government should try to stop its sale and use in those states.  Even among those who think marijuana should be illegal, only half think the federal government should get involved with the states.

This sentiment cuts across party lines:  Majorities of Republicans (63 percent), Democrats (76 percent), and independents (72 percent) oppose the federal government trying to stop marijuana use in these states.

Marijuana compared to alcohol and other drugs

Generally, most Americans think habitual drug use should be treated as an addiction problem rather than a criminal offense.  Even most Americans who oppose legalizing marijuana think so.  Majorities of Republicans, Democrats, and independents all agree.

Most Americans view marijuana in particular as safer than alcohol.

mj-v-alcohol-poll.jpg

And most Americans also think marijuana is less dangerous than most other drugs, particularly those who say they have tried it.

There continues to be wide support for allowing doctors to prescribe small amounts of marijuana for patients suffering from serious illnesses:  88 percent of Americans think this should be allowed – similar to a year ago.  Even most Americans who oppose legalizing marijuana in general think medical marijuana use should be allowed.

Who supports it, and who’s tried it?

Support for legalization has risen among all age groups – particularly those under 55.  Americans under 35 show the strongest support.  Three in four adults between 18 and 34 support legal marijuana use, as do six in 10 Americans between 35 and 64.  Seniors remain the one age group for whom a majority still think marijuana use should be against the law.

support-mj-poll.jpg

There are partisan differences.  Most Democrats and independents increasingly think marijuana use should be legal, while Republicans are divided.

The percentage of Americans who say they have personally tried marijuana has risen over the past twenty years.  Now half of Americans say they have tried it, similar to a year ago, though up from a third who said they did in 1997.

ever-tried-mj-poll.jpg

Though support for legalized marijuana use has increased among women, most women say they still haven’t tried marijuana (most men say they have).  Most Americans under 65 say they have tried it, while just a quarter of seniors 65 and older have.  Independents are a little more likely to have tried it than either Democrats or Republicans.

This poll was conducted by telephone April 11-15, 2017 among a random sample of 1,011 adults nationwide.  Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by SSRS of Media, PA.  Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones.

The poll employed a random digit dial methodology. For the landline sample, a respondent was randomly selected from all adults in the household. For the cell sample, interviews were conducted with the person who answered the phone.

Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish using live interviewers. The data have been weighted to reflect U.S. Census figures on demographic variables.

The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus four percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher and is available by request. The margin of error includes the effects of standard weighting procedures which enlarge sampling error slightly.

This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

Some of the Most Bizarre Google Products Ever Announced that You’d Probably Want to Use

Google is one company that never fails to impress when it comes to crazy products. Today, we look at some of the best fake products that the company has announced and maybe get a laugh while at it.

This is what happens when a company has lots of money, time and some of the mos brilliant minds in the world:

Gmail Blue

Starting us off, is Gmail Blue. Gmail Blue sounds like it works the same way YouTube Red does, by offering a more premium experience. I am sorry to disappoint you.

Gmail Blue was literally Gmail in Blue. While introducing the product, the product manager says that Gmail Blue was the original conception for Gmail but the technology to make it possible was not there.

The product manager goes ahead to explain that Gmail Blue is Gmail, only “Bluer”

Gmail Tap

This was an interesting one. How many of you actually know morse code? Well, Gmail Tap was going to redesign the keyboard within the app, so that one could use morse code to type.

The team behind Google Tap says that the keyboard is overwhelming. The team thinks that the keyboard has too many buttons and they therefore resulted to improving the typing experience. Thus, Google Tap. A dot and a dash.

Google Nose

If you haven’t gotten it from the title, Google Nose was a product designed to allow users to search for smells on Google. Users would also be able to smell whatever they search on Google by simply clicking the “smell” button.

The service would even let users share scents with their friends. Sounds like a product you’d really want right?

I do realize that it’s 20 April, which is 19 days past April Fools’ but this is a throwback. Throwbacks have no dates.

Pornhub’s TrickPics app makes sharing nudes fun and safe

Sending a good nude comes with plenty of dangers and possible consequences. Prying eyes might want to take these sexy images from you. Then there’s always the risk of getting flagged from networks. It’s time for a new type of service and a company obviously no one has ever heard about has come out with a solution. They go by the name of Pornhub.

This obscure site has created an app called TrickPics, which can quickly turn your NSFW shots into SFW images. The concept is pretty simple. The application allows you to use filters and overlay stickers on your private parts. Whoever named them must get praised; they came up with monikers like “Hand Solo”, “D-Moji”, “Dickin-a-box”, “Knock Knockers”, “Instaclam”, “Midnight Snack” and my personal favorite… “My Precious”.

Note: There is a promotional video for the new app, but we’re not going to attach it here since it’s a tad NSFW. If you really want, you can find it on Pornhub’s YouTube channel here.

The company claims this makes nudes special, others would argue it’s taking the fun out of them, but one thing is for sure – it is making these fun selfies safer in multiple senses. You can share these as you wish after covering up those special body parts. Pornhub also keeps security in check by implementing HTTPS encryption.

Interested? It seems like a fun app, but it is not being welcomed as warmly as their other content has been. The app has plenty of bad reviews in the Google Play Store, mostly from disappointed users who think it’s nothing but a glorified camera app. Is it? Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments (or, you know… keep your reputation clean).

TRUTH: Magnesium, NOT Calcium, Is The Key To Healthy Strong Bones.

We are taught that the key to improved bone health, including improved bone density, lies in the consumption of calcium-rich foods. However, it turns out that calcium is one of the many minerals your body requires for building solid bones.

According to this study, magnesium is likely to be the real key to stronger and healthier bones.

Magnesium is mineral which is commonly found in sunflower seeds, broccoli, spinach, basil, and sesame seeds.

LOOKING CRITICALLY AT CALCIUM

It has been scientifically shown that increased levels of calcium, especially the use of calcium supplements, is linked to higher risk of for heart attack, particularly in women.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, calcium supplements are a poor substitute for dietary calcium. High intake of calcium supplements is linked to kidney stones and other health issues.

Calcium carbonate, which is found in calcium supplements and pasteurized milk, is significantly difficult for the body to absorb without an agent, such as citric acid.

As shown by a 2007 study, calcium derived from dietary sources has more beneficial effects on bone health when compared to calcium from supplements in postmenopausal women.

MAGNESIUM RESEARCH

Abrams, the head of a study at the Baylor College Of Medicine, focused on the intake and absorption of magnesium during childhood. The most surprising finding was that calcium intake and absorption were not notoriously linked to the total bone mineral content and bone density while magnesium intake and absorption clearly were.

“Dietary magnesium intake may be an important, relatively unrecognized, factor in bone mineral accretion in children,” the researchers revealed.

“Lots of nutrients are key for children to have healthy bones. One of these appears to be magnesium,” said Abrams. “Calcium is important, but, except for those children and adolescents with very low intakes, may not be more important than magnesium.”

The researchers were pretty concerned about the fact that while calcium intake is widely promoted for better bone health, it appears that other minerals, such as magnesium, were going relatively unremarked on. They advise parents to make sure their children get enough magnesium. Moreover, they would like to see more awareness about the role of magnesium when it comes to better bone health.

According to a report by Kathryn M. Ride and colleagues from the University of Memphis, Tennessee, magnesium intake is not just important for children. Elderly people, who are at increased risk for bone fractures, should get enough magnesium, too.

SUPPLEMENTING WITH DIETARY MAGNESIUM

It appears that the ideal ratio of calcium to magnesium in the diet is 1:1. Even though ratio of 2:1 works too, today`s diets contain a calcium to magnesium ratio of closer to 10:1. In other words, this is ten times more calcium than magnesium.

Green leafy vegetables, nuts of any kind, cacao, and seeds are some of the best sources of magnesium. In addition, you can also add some Epsom salt to a hot bath as it is made of magnesium sulfate.

Even though getting your magnesium naturally is the best, many people who are deficient in magnesium can consider taking supplements. The recommended daily allowance for magnesium is 350-400 mg daily, and most magnesium capsules contain between 250 and 500 mg of magnesium. These capsules should be taken on an empty stomach or with meals.

When it comes to measuring the levels of magnesium in the body, it can be tricky. As a matter of fact, only a small fraction of your body`s magnesium is stored in the blood, and in case this level drops, the body takes magnesium from the bones and tissues to replenish the level. Consequently, the blood test is likely to show a normal reading of magnesium levels, even if the body could still be deficient.
